When Legacy POS Became a Royal Pain

When Legacy POS Became a Royal Pain

The company’s developmental journey presented its own challenges over time. As The Royal Standard expanded its retail footprint and wholesale business, its legacy POS system, Retail Pro, and its QuickBooks accounting system, began to strain under the growing transaction volume and operational complexity. Processes slowed, data lagged, and visibility across channels became increasingly difficult.

To support its growth strategy, the company transitioned to NetSuite ERP in 2013 and soon after adopted TCS POS, creating a tightly integrated platform designed to scale with the business.

Powering Growth with NetSuite and TCS POS

The integration between TCS POS, NetSuite ERP, and NetSuite SuiteCommerce eliminated transaction bottlenecks and unlocked real-time visibility across the organisation. Today, The Royal Standard manages roughly 20,000 active SKUs, with instant insight into items available, in transit, or on order across all locations – critical for a business managing approximately $26 million in annual revenue with a lean corporate staff.

Because TCS POS uses the NetSuite database for real-time inventory, pricing, and quantities, the business has been able to grow without operational disruption.

That foundation has paid off. Over the past five years, for example, The Royal Standard has achieved:

  • Total company revenue growth: +52%
  • Retail store growth: +38%
  • Ecommerce growth: +144%

Data-Driven Decisions at Scale

The move to NetSuite ERP with native TCS POS integration delivered immediate improvements in reporting accuracy and inventory management. According to Emily Dykes, CEO of The Royal Standard, the system enables hundreds of custom reports and saved searches using complex formulas and custom fields.

The team tracks data points such as date received, date last sold, sell-through percentages, on-hand inventory, and goods in transit – providing a level of transparency and operational control that simply wasn’t possible before.

With real-time NetSuite inventory flowing directly into TCS POS, the company can instantly update prices, quantities, descriptions, and product attributes across both ecommerce sites with no data delay. “Selling on two websites with no lag is one of the most important things for us,” Dykes said.

These insights directly inform buying decisions. The merchandising team analyses historical sales data to identify top-performing attributes like colour and price point, then plans biannual product launches – about 1,500 new SKUs per collection – accordingly. Categories that perform well are expanded, while underperforming ones are refined or reduced.

Raising the Standard in Ecommerce

Raising the Standard in Ecommerce

In early 2020, The Royal Standard migrated its B2C ecommerce site to NetSuite SuiteCommerce. The rapid implementation, combined with TCS POS, gave the retailer enhanced omnichannel capabilities, including click-and-collect and local delivery from the distribution centre – capabilities that proved critical during store shutdowns.

“This resulted in higher conversion rates and increased average order value. By adopting SuiteCommerce and TCS POS, ecommerce sales have increased by 144% and retail stores by 38% over the last five years.”

That growth, Dykes noted, “wouldn’t be possible without the increased capabilities in NetSuite grounded in those of TCS POS.”

By managing inventory and ecommerce within a single, integrated system, The Royal Standard eliminated the manual CSV updates and reconciliation issues that plagued its previous environment. Pricing changes once had to be updated in multiple systems, often weekly, creating inconsistencies and customer frustration. Orders placed online didn’t always appear in store systems.

Now, real-time integration ensures accuracy across channels. Customer data flows instantly into store registries, inventory availability is always current, and the risk of overselling limited-edition products is dramatically reduced. Reports can be easily customised.

“There’s a sense of urgency around accuracy,” Dykes said. “You don’t want to disappoint a customer by letting them order something that’s no longer in stock.”

“This resulted in higher conversion rates and increased average order value. By adopting SuiteCommerce and TCS POS, ecommerce sales have increased by 144% and retail stores by 38% over the last five years.”

Lean Operations, Strong Financial Control

NetSuite and TCS POS also support efficient back-office operations. The Royal Standard’s accounting team consists of just three people, relying on automation such as bank feeds, automated dunning letters, and centralized document storage in the NetSuite File Cabinet.

Financial reporting is faster and more reliable. Managers analyse year-over-year performance by store or department directly in the ERP, without exporting data to spreadsheets. The real-time connection between TCS POS and NetSuite simplifies month-end and year-end closes, improves visibility, and reduces errors.

“The integration has allowed us to increase revenue 52% over the past four years while keeping payroll expenses relatively flat – only a 6% increase in the same time period,” said Dykes. “We have expanded significantly using technology with minimal increase in staff. This has resulted in our most profitable years since launch.”

Built for Scalability and Service

Built for Scalability and Service

On the sales floor, TCS POS gives associates instant access to inventory across all locations. If an item isn’t in stock locally, staff can create a transfer order or sales order for shipment directly to the customer – without leaving the POS or calling another department. Managers can also restrict inventory availability by location to prevent overselling limited runs.

These capabilities not only protect margins but also enhance the customer experience when it matters most.

Setting the Standard for What’s Next

Looking ahead, The Royal Standard plans to continue expanding its B2B operations and refining its ecommerce experience. In the near term, the focus is on optimizing processes and evaluating new technologies rather than increasing store count – always with an eye toward improving usability for both customers and employees.

Each initiative supports the company’s broader goal: reaching more customers around the world who share its love of classic-modern design, supported by a scalable, real-time retail platform.
